CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Jail
THE PRECINCT WAS A COLD, institutional place in the main part of Great Falls. Two steps forward, one step back, Paul thought as they sat on a couple of chairs waiting for who knew what. At least the cuffs were off now that they were in the precinct. The officers took their packs into another room, emptied them and inspected the contents. After a bit, they came out holding the alien sticks.
“What are these?” Smith asked.
“They are some kind of blaster weapon,” Paul said. “But they only work when one of the alien saucers is nearby, far as I can tell.”
“What!” Smith said. “Aliens?”
He examined the stick and found the button. He pressed it, but nothing happened.
“Looks like a toy,” he said. “I think you’re playing games, here, kid.”
“No, sir,” Paul said. He thought about telling Smith about the attack in Buffalo, Wyoming. Then thought better of it. No sense implicating themselves in all that destruction and loss of life.
“You said your parents are trapped in Charlotte,” Jones said as he came out of the other room. “How did that happen?”
“Someone called them and told them we had a relative in the hospital,” Amy said. “They went to Charlotte, and then we heard that a dome had come down over the city. No one has been able to enter or leave, and there hasn’t been any communication.”
“You’ve heard of the weird things happening around the world, right?” Paul asked.
“You mean like the black fog over Washington, D.C.? Yeah, heard of it,” Smith said. “That’s not saying I believe it.”
“Add Rapid City to that black fog list,” Paul said.
“And add St. Louis as the city that just stopped,” Amy added.
The officers stood and studied the kids for a bit.
“Okay,” Smith said. “We can’t do anything with you tonight. We’re going to put you in cells for the evening and have the county social worker come in and sort out what to do in the morning.”
“How can you do that?” Paul asked. “We haven’t done anything wrong.”
“Not that we know of,” Jones said. “But we do have a citizen complaint. And you are juveniles with no parental supervision.”
Citizen complaint, Paul thought. Sherman.
The cold sterility of the environment extended to the cells. A stainless steel commode, a small stainless steel sink, a bed with a sheet and a blanket, and a bare concrete floor were the accommodations. Amy was put in one cell, Paul in another. They were told to keep quiet and go to sleep, and there would be breakfast in the morning. At least the cells were clean.
